3 airports opening new runways amid economic woes (AP)

It is one of three multimillion-dollar runways are set to open at U.S. airports Thursday, but the immediate impact aviation officials touted when plans got off the ground will be stunted amid global economic woes that have fewer people taking to the skies. Pete Newell - August 3, 1915 – November 17, 2008

Peter Francis "Pete" Newell was a college men's basketball coach and basketball instructional coach. He coached for 15 years at the University of San Francisco, Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley, compiling an overall 234-123 record. After his coaching career ended he ran a world famous instructional basketball camp and served as a consultant and scout for several NBA teams. He is often considered to be one of the most influential figures in the history of basketball.

Newell attended both high school and college in Los Angeles, California and was a classmate of Phil Woolpert at Loyola Marymount University (then called Loyola University). After serving in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946, Newell was appointed head men's basketball coach at the University of San Francisco in 1946. During his four-year tenure at USF, Newell compiled a 70-37 record and coached the Dons to the 1949 National Invitation Tournament championship. In 1950 he accepted an appointment as head coach at Michigan State University where he stayed until 1954.
Newell returned to the West Coast in 1954 when he was hired as head coach at the University of California, Berkeley. Newell was very successful at Cal, compiling a 119-44 record, winning four consecutive Pac-8 titles from 1957 to 1960 and leading the Golden Bears to two straight appearances in the NCAA tournament championship game--which they won in 1959. Newell himself earned national Coach of the Year honors in 1960.
Newell also coached the U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team to a gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics, making him one of only three coaches to win the "Triple Crown" of NCAA, NIT and Olympic championships. Newell is also known to have introduced the reverse action offense in the late nineteen fifties.
After retiring from coaching, Newell served as team executive or scout for several NBA teams, among them the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. He retired from his job as Lakers GM in 1976 to spend more time with his ailing wife.

Considered "America's Basketball Guru", Newell conducts an annual training camp for centers and forwards known simply as "Big Man Camp", which has since been informally dubbed "Pete Newell's Big Man Camp". The camp originated when word spread that Newell was working with Kermit Washington. After Washington's game rapidly improved, more and more big men started to work with Newell and he later opened the camp. The camp's impressive participants list features over 200 current and former NBA players. Newell has attracted this list of players due to his reputation of teaching footwork, being what one publication described as "The Footwork Master". Former attendants include Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Bill Walton, and many others. The camp is almost seen as standard for players coming out of college into the NBA; according to ESPN's Ric Bucher, "For the past 24 years, every big man of any significance has spent at least one summer week trying to get close enough to Pete.". Since Newell opened the camp in 1976 he has not accepted any money for his services, instead he has donated his time feeling that as he states, "I owe it to the game. I can never repay what the game has given me." The camp has taken place in Honolulu, Hawaii and most recently Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2001 Newell opened his version of the Big Man Camp for women and dubbed it "Pete Newell's Tall Women's Basketball Camp" with the following simple sentence serving as a summary of its intentions: "The Pete Newell Tall Women's Basketball Camp goal is to continue to do what Pete Newell has done his whole life-to teach the fundamentals and footwork of the game of basketball to young players."

In 1979 Newell was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. An annual college basketball tournament is held in his honor in Oakland, California, and frequent participants in the Pete Newell Challenge include USF and Cal--the very schools where Newell coached. In addition in 1987 Cal dedicated the court in Harmon Gym as "Pete Newell Court".

Since 2000, the National Association of Basketball Coaches has annually presented the Pete Newell Big Man Award to the top frontcourt player in the nation.

In an interview with Mike Greenberg on ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning on January 2, 2007, Bob Knight singled Newell out as one of the greatest coaches in Men's College Basketball history. Knight stated that although he had not won as many championships as some other coaches he felt "he was as good as anybody who's ever coached this game." Newell's influence on basketball is often stated in what would seem to be almost exaggerated terms by many Hall of Fame coaches and players. However, his contributions to the game of basketball have been so great that according to many Newell has perhaps had as much or more influence on the game of basketball as any person in the modern era.

The Great News About All the Bad News

(Ideas to increase your wealth when the stock market is down)

Every optimist will tell you that there is always the opposite side of bad news... good news. There is always a silver lining. The needle is somewhere in the haystack , if you look hard enough for it.

So, the bad news is we have some issues with the economy. Stock market woes, rising oil costs, unemployment and job loss due to outsourcing are a few of the concerns. Let's concentrate on the stock market for now.

Does anyone think the reporters get commissions on how many bad things they can report on? The "mad currency guy on TV".. can he be any more negative? A skeptic may wonder if he recommends selling to everyone; then goes and buys up what he wants at reduced prices.

Newsflash: The stock market goes up and it goes down. Recently its been trending down. Not a reason to go sell off your whole portfolio.
Quite the contrary, some crazy aggressive people may say. Who are these brash, radical people?

Well, history tells us just how several of the wealthiest investors built their fortunes. They used a is a simple formula that most, if not all of us, are familiar with . Its called BL-SH ( BUY LOW and SELL HIGH).

Have you ever heard of investment gurus Peter Lynch, Warren Buffett, and Ben Graham (the pioneer of value investing)? What about real estate tycoons Steve Wynn (Mr. Las Vegas), Donald Trump and Conrad Hilton (you may know of his great granddaughter Paris, or you may have stayed in one of his hotels somewhere on the planet)?

What quality do all of these giants have in common? Other than putting their pants on the same way... they all subscribe to the BL-SH method. This is one way to gather great wealth. When the masses are selling scared (thanks to a ultra negative media), who do you think is gobbling up these companies at extremely reduced prices?

Here is a case history of 3 solid NYSE companies.

Johnson and Johnson (JNJ) in 2002 was at a high of $65 and crashed to a low of $41 in 2002. The proverbial sky was falling, people were very nervous and JNJ was in major trouble as the market was going "bad". Some bad periods last longer than others. Nonetheless, JNJ keeps doing what it does best, making baby shampoos and powders and other household items we've all used since we can remember. So did JNJ survive? In the last 3 years JNJ had traded between $59- 70 and today is at $64. Wish I bought in 2002 when everyone was seilling in the $40's.

Abbott Labs(ABT)is another rock solid company. Similarly, it was at $58 in 2002 and went all the way to $29 ( people lost 50% of their investment, IF THEY SOLD). The last three years its been between $37-61 and today its at $53. Another one I'd love to have bought, even in the high $30's.

Stryker(SYK) is another incredible cash cow. In 2002 investors of Stryker saw it go from $33 to 21.. a 34% decline for a rock soilid company. Cause for concern?? The people buying in the last three years have seen Stryker in a $39-77 range, and today at a tempting $62. Stryker has increased its earnings 10-20% per year, for as long as I can remember, and if management is correct, the future looks pretty bright too.

Enough math. The point is if you own solid companies, why get all nervous and sell because some so called "expert" on tv has told you all the scary reasons why our economy is doomed? As always, do your homework and buy good solid companies with track records that consistently churn out a profit. Sell, if you think there is a good , viable reason to sell. Look around. Have your adviser/ broker/ investment person find you 10-20 stocks that are rock solid. There are several hundred out there to choose from. And, they are "on sale".

Don't forget a few famous laws of physics. For every action there is a reaction. For every problem, there is an opportunity for those looking.

There is an old saying "Don t be afraid to go out on a limb, for that is where the fruit is". The great news is some of that "bargain fruit" may turn out quite tasty.
